House Tour: Como Industrial

Jul 15, 2020

Warm and welcoming aren’t two words normally used to describe a modern industrial house, but that is exactly the feel created in our stunning, custom-built home in Como.

With a clear vision of what our clients wanted for their family home, owner Holly George says the design perfectly transformed from paper to reality.

“We built our home with Riverstone and I’m glad we did,” she explains.

“We gave Riverstone a really clear brief.  We entertain a lot so the house had to accommodate large numbers of people.

“I also was clear about the house having flow, so that our lives are simpler.”

“I was very clear – with our home it always has to have a feeling of love so that when people walk in the door, they feel like this is a welcoming space, and they delivered on that.

It is that simplicity that shines through in the luxury two storey, five bedroom home. The modern façade is striking with its bold, straight lines and stone feature wall, while inside, timber floors soften the edgier features, helping to achieve that homely feel.

Both levels are flooded with light, from the bright, open entry via glass doors, to the upstairs windows which offer views of the city.

The main living space has an incredible double-sided fireplace with terrazzo base separating the dining and living area, creating a beautiful focal point in the home as well as being functional.

Splashes of terrazzo also feature in the sleek kitchen, which works beautifully with the dark timber veneer cabinetry and white stone benchtops, carried through to the island bench and breakfast bar, which overlooks the dining area and out to the alfresco.

“I love the kitchen because when I’m working in the kitchen I’m facing out and I’m looking out onto this amazing space,” Holly says.

“Also the fact that the kitchen is just easy to use, so it’s a very functional build.”

The scullery and study are at either end of the kitchen, and the ground floor also has a sitting room, guest bedroom with ensuite and laundry.

The staircase is a feature on its own, with the wire balustrade bringing in the industrial look while the space underneath has been used for storage.

“It’s actually trendy to have an open staircase – I wanted storage,” Holly says. “I think Riverstone really achieved the design and function with the staircase.”

The master suite has a large balcony to take in the beautiful park views, dressing room and ensuite.

“The master bedroom, just to wake up of a morning and you can look out with the view out onto the park.

“The bathrooms, I love the simplicity of them – there’s no glass, so that was also in our design brief – no glass, very low maintenance.”

The upper floor also has three minor bedrooms with walk-in robes, a family bathroom and plenty of storage.

The luxury finishes were expertly selected together with Riverstone’s interior architect Nadia De Cerff, which Holly says was one of the many highlights during the design and build.

“The whole process was actually a joyous process,” she says.

“If they say they’re going to deliver something, they absolutely will deliver it 100 per cent.”

Holly and her husband were also pleasantly surprised to find out exactly what was included in the price when they went for their initial meeting, and discovered the pricing was all up front.

“It was beyond our expectations to be honest.

“And everybody goes, ‘you built and you felt like that? That’s such a rare experience’. But that was truly how we felt.

“If I built again, I would definitely choose Riverstone again.”
